Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2020 Reserva was produced with a blend of 80% Tempranillo and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, a selection of two plots, mostly from the zone of El Picón below the winery where the soils are very white and rich in limestone and the Cabernet from the gravel and sandy soils. 2020 was a little warmer than 2021 but cooler than the following years, 2022 and 2023. This is always a very serious wine, and it has ripeness and 14.5% alcohol but very good balance and harmony, with enough freshness and acidity to come through as a powerful but elegant. The differences between this and the regular Hacienda Monasterio are basically the origin, the plots and a slightly higher percentage of Cabernet and perhaps a little more new oak (no more than 40%), because the Cabernet Sauvignon from Hacienda Monasterio takes the new oak very well compared with Tempranillo, because the grape ripens very well and integrates the oak very well. It is full-bodied, powerful and elegant, with stuffing and balance to develop nicely in bottle. 50,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2023.

Description
In the heart of the prestigious Ribera del Duero, between the emblematic towns of Pesquera and Valbuena de Duero, stands Hacienda Monasterio, a 113-hectare wine paradise that embodies the vision of renowned Danish winemaker Peter Sisseck, a pioneer of modern oenology in this region. Since its founding in 1991, the winery has sought to highlight the authenticity and elegance of the terroir, taking advantage of a natural environment that combines a continental climate and limestone-rich soils, elements that imprint a marked minerality to its wines.
Hacienda Monasterio Reserva is a meticulously crafted creation, composed of 80% Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, grown in south-facing vineyards that make the most of the sunlight. These varieties are selected from specific plots, such as the El Picón area, known for its combination of sandy and gravelly soils, which favour drainage and depth of flavours.
Winemaking
Winemaking is an art at Hacienda Monasterio Reserva. The grapes, 100% destemmed, undergo a maceration process of 25 to 28 days to extract the maximum aromas and polyphenolic compounds from the fruit. Fermentation is carried out in stainless steel tanks with indigenous yeasts, which enhances the natural expression of the vineyard. After this process, the wine rests for 19 months in French Allier oak barrels, 60% of which are new, providing a refined tannic structure and a complex character that evolves over time in the bottle.
Taste
Hacienda Monasterio Reserva presents itself in the glass with an intense ruby red colour and bright highlights. On the nose, it displays a range of aromas that combine the best of its blend: notes of ripe black fruit, mineral hints, and a subtle presence of roasted and balsamic aromas that add depth. The Cabernet Sauvignon adds an extra dimension with subtle menthol notes that refresh the olfactory profile.
On the palate, the entry is enveloping and silky, revealing polished tannins that support a firm structure. The palate is ample and elegant, with a lingering mineral sensation that integrates harmoniously with the dark fruit and a light cinnamon spice on the finish. The balanced acidity brings freshness and prolongs the pleasure, leaving an aftertaste that invites a second glass. This wine is a tribute to balance and complexity, promising excellent ageing potential that will make it more seductive as the years go by.
Hacienda Monasterio Reserva is ideal to accompany haute cuisine dishes, such as roasts, game dishes and red meats with spicy sauces. However, its richness and structure also make it a meditation wine, perfect to enjoy on a special occasion.
