Description
From the sunny slopes of Eguisheim, in the heart of Alsace, Jean Ginglinger tends his vineyard like a Zen gardener tends his landscape: patiently, without artifice, and allowing himself to be guided by the natural rhythms. In a region where tradition weighs heavily, Jean has chosen another path: biodynamics as a philosophy rather than a method, seeking to clearly express the texture of soils made up of limestone and calcareous sandstone, loaded with geological memory. Ginglinger Pinot Gris is born from this impulse: to show the grape without make-up, without corrections or ornamentation.
Winemaking
Ginglinger Pinot Gris is harvested by hand, with rigorous selection in the field. The grapes are gently pressed and the must ferments spontaneously in large traditional wooden vats, with no temperature control or added yeasts. The wine then remains on its fine lees until April, when it is bottled without fining, filtering or additives (except for a minimal dose of sulphur if deemed necessary). This long ageing on the lees provides depth and an enveloping texture without losing freshness.
Taste
Ginglinger Pinot Gris shows a restrained but deeply expressive profile. Notes of ripe pear, baked apple and white peach appear on the nose, enveloped by a background of wet stone and chalky dust. It is not an aromatic wine in the exuberant style, but low register, mineral, which grows in the glass. The palate is silky, medium-bodied, with a moderate acidity that allows the fruit to express itself without tension. There are hints of white fruit, subtle dried fruits and a persistent, almost saline minerality. The finish is long, with a delicate bitterness reminiscent of pear or green almond skin.
A wine for those seeking elegance without affectation, structure without rigidity, and the purity of a terroir worked with conviction.
