Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2016 Granato has a streamlined elegance that I love. This pure expression of Teroldego sees partial stem inclusion during fermentation (for a third of the total mass). Fermentation occurs in oak with skin contact that lasts 20 days. After that, it goes into oak for 15 months. The stem inclusion clearly adds more structure and a clean tannin bite that is otherwise hard to achieve with this grape. The Foradori family has been experimenting with stems since 2013, but the first vintage released with this technique was 2015. The goal is to extract the firmness, without any bitterness. Grapes were harvested on the late side at the end of September and beginning of October in 2016 (a vintage that saw cool temperatures and rain in advance of harvest). However, the wine's dark blackberry and blueberry characteristics remain enticing and exuberant. Give this wine a few more years of bottle aging to put on more weight. Some 20,000 bottles were made.

Features

Description

Foradori Granato is a wine that evokes the union between grapes and pomegranate, fruits that share origins and often grow together in the Mediterranean basin. This relationship gives rise to the name 'Granato'. The wine has the Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT designation. It is made from Teroldego grapes, of particular concentration and density, grown in ancient pergola vineyards located in Campo Rotaliano, Mezzolombardo. These vines extend over 4 hectares, spread over three varied plots. The terroir is alluvial, with gravel and pebbles.

Winemaking

Vinification is certified organic and the grapes are harvested by hand. Spontaneous fermentation is carried out with indigenous yeasts and without sulphur in open wooden vats. The maceration with submerged cap lasts several weeks. The wine is aged for about 15 months in large, old foudres of up to 2,200 litres. It is bottled without fining or filtering, with a small dose of sulphur, and aged for another year. Annual production is 20,000 bottles.

Taste

Foradori Granato has an attractive garnet red colour with violet hues. Although it is easy to drink and has an eminently fruity character, it is surprisingly complex. On the nose, it displays aromas of liquorice, cherry and cedar, complemented by subtle leather notes. On the palate, flavours of blueberries and a touch of sour cream emerge, intertwined with young tannins that, while showing some grip, integrate harmoniously into the whole. Medium-high acidity enhances flavours of red cherry, fresh strawberry and pomegranate juice, while a subtle tobacco scent emerges on the aftertaste. This wine culminates with a long, lingering finish. It is the perfect accompaniment to dishes such as pasta pomodoro and pesto.
