Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Dönnhoff's 2021 Felsenberg GG is pure, bright and flinty on the deep, intense and iodine nose that also reveals phenolic complexity. Full-bodied but refined and elegant on the plate, this is a balanced and light-footed, rich and dense Felsenberg with juicy fruit and crystalline acidity, whereas the tannins step back compared to the Höllenpfad im Mühlenberg. The finish is rich yet refined and saline, with delicate lemon bitters and lush fruit. Although the 2021 is already charming, the wine needs some years on the bottle to show all its complexity and finesse without its youthful charm. This is not an austere wine that needs to soften its edges; it's already dangerously good or even too good to cause patience. But the wine will reward those who can wait. 13% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in July 2022.

Features

Description

Dönnhoff Felsenberg GG is characterised by its deep connection with the terroir of the Nahe region in Germany.

Winemaking

Made from the Riesling grape variety. The grapes come from vineyards that are approximately 25-30 years old, which guarantees maturity and complexity in the fruit. Harvesting is 100% selective and manual, ensuring that only the best grapes are used in the winemaking process. Once harvested, the grapes go through a fermentation process and then the wine is aged on the lees in stainless steel tanks as well as in traditional oak barrels, which gives the wine a balanced structure and a rich aromatic palette.

Taste

It has a pale, bright yellow colour. On the nose, it is discreet, but with spicy notes and delicate fruit. On the palate, it is round, smooth and balanced, with a very mild acidity. Its minerality stands out, with an earthy touch in the aftertaste. It is a dry Riesling of great complexity, with a crystalline minerality marked by silex. The finish is long, dominated by notes of crushed stone. It is a wine that, although it can be enjoyed in its youth, has great ageing potential, and can evolve and improve over the years in the bottle.
