Description
Domaine de L’Ecu Classic was founded in the Muscadet region with a very clear vision: to produce an essential, pure, unadorned white wine, capable of conveying the Atlantic landscape and the estate’s identity with complete candour. Claire and Fred Niger cultivate this historic estate using biodynamic methods, convinced that wine should emerge from the land rather than from human intervention. In a region where the ocean sets the rhythm of the climate and where soils of gneiss, granite, schist and gabbro impart an unmistakable mineral character, this 100% Melon de Bourgogne white celebrates restraint, tension and salinity as its virtues. ‘Classic’ is no mere label, but almost a statement of principle: a return to the essence of Muscadet, yet with the depth and conviction of a great estate.
Production
AtDomaine de L'Ecu Classic, the grapes are harvested by hand and flow into the cellar by gravity, preserving their full integrity. The whole bunches are pressed in a pneumatic press and fermentation begins with indigenous yeasts, without prior racking, allowing the must to retain its substance and character. The wine is aged on its lees in underground concrete tanks, an environment that refines the wine without imparting foreign aromas and which enhances its texture, its inner calm and its mineral expression. Everything here is geared towards transparency, precision and a direct connection with the terroir.
Taste
On the nose,Domaine de L'Ecu Classic is straightforward and serious, far from exuberant, with notes of damp stone and delicate citrus rather than loud fruit. Lemon, lime, grapefruit and very subtle white flowers emerge, alongside a subtle smoky and waxy note that adds depth. On the palate, it has body, yet is always underpinned by a vibrant acidity that stretches and sharpens it. A salty sensation dominates with elegance, accompanied by a iodine-tinged minerality reminiscent of oyster shells, a sea breeze and lemon on an oyster. It is dry, fresh, long-finishing and tremendously food-friendly. A wine offering understated pleasure, precise and true to its origins.
