Description
From a time when the old vines lay forgotten in the valleys of the Alta Najerilla, the vision of Eduardo Eguren, a winemaker who decided to rescue their history, was born. In an act of admirable courage, he formed a small group of young winegrowers to reclaim the centuries-old Garnacha of Cordovín and Badarán. Thus Cuentaviñas Garnacha CDVIN was born, a reinterpretation of the Rioja by ancestral roots cultivated in soils of clay, silt and gypsum veins, at an altitude of over 600 metres above sea level. The Atlantic breeze and the Sierra de la Demanda mountain range moderate the climate, imparting freshness and character. The philosophy of the project revolves around a deep respect for the terroir: organic viticulture, minimal intervention, and an intimate knowledge of each plot. The vines, in goblet vines and over 90 years old, are worked by hand and horseback, as in the old days.
Winemaking
The Cuentaviñas Garnacha CDVIN grapes are harvested by hand, with a double selection of bunches in the vineyard and in the winery. The grapes are gently destemmed and fermented with indigenous yeasts in small 3,000-litre French oak vats. The maceration is prolonged for about 20 days with gentle manual punching down. After a vertical press, the wine undergoes natural malolactic fermentation in used 500-litre barrels, which avoids the excessive influence of wood. The wine was aged for 14 months on its fine lees, without racking or filtering. Cuentaviñas Garnacha CDVIN then rests in the bottle in an 18th century underground cellar, which allows for slow stabilisation, with minimal need for sulphur dioxide.
Taste
Cuentaviñas Garnacha CDVIN is a restrained and elegant expression of the variety. Medium-high robe, its deep cherry colour anticipates a complex nose: black fruits (blackberry, plum), dried violets, bitter cocoa and subtle spices such as aniseed and black pepper. Notes of blond tobacco, rose petals, lavender and thyme also emerge. The palate is vibrant and fresh, with crisp fruit (blueberry, pomegranate) on a background of milk chocolate and an echo of toffee. The tannins are fine but persistent, providing structure without harshness. The finish is long, saline, slightly earthy, with hints of graphite and a bright acidity that invites you to keep drinking. It is a wine that navigates elegantly between tension and maturity, without over-extraction or artifice. A pure, precise and gastronomic profile, ideal for those seeking authenticity and expression of the vineyard.
