Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The varietal Garnacha 2023 El Molar comes from small grapes that need to be handled carefully and trying not to extract a lot. It was the ripest Garnacha they have harvested, from low yields and a very long period of drought, resulting in a wine with 14.5% alcohol, which is the usual here, but the aromatic palette is faintly riper. This is more Châteauneuf than Gredos, Mediterranean and with a more classical profile. It has very fine, chalky tannins and a slight dusty sensation. With time in the glass, it turned a little jammier. All the Garnacha on the property was used for this wine, and 26,000 bottles were produced. It was bottled in March 2025 after aging in oak foudres.

Features

Description

Casa Castillo El Molar is a red wine from the Jumilla region. This wine is a unique representation of Garnacha, which distinguishes it from other wines made from this variety. It is especially remarkable because southeastern Spain is not commonly recognised as a typical provenance area for this variety. Casa Castillo has demonstrated its mastery in the making of this wine, presenting a highly enjoyable red wine, with a sweet character, marked by ample freshness and fluidity.

Winemaking

The wine comes from plots located on the slopes of the Sierra del Molar. These vines, aged between 13 and 16 years, grow in sandy loam soils covered with gravel, under a continental Mediterranean climate.
The grapes are harvested by hand and 50% of the grapes are destemmed during vinification. Alcoholic fermentation is spontaneous, using indigenous yeasts in underground stone vats at temperatures of between 30 and 32 ºC. Malolactic fermentation is carried out in vats. It is aged for 14 months, combining 500-litre barrels and 5,000-litre foudres.

Taste

Casa Castillo El Molar stands out for its frank and sincere flavour, characteristic of Casa Castillo wines. It presents notes of blue and red flowers, together with fresh red fruit and vegetables, making it easy, elegant and subtle on the palate.
On the palate, you can perceive a tannin that is still slightly grippy, and a subtle, almost imperceptible wood at an aromatic level, which provides structure, fat and final volume.
It is a wine that can be enjoyed in its youth if you prefer livelier flavours, or cellared for a couple of years for those looking for a silkier, more fluid experience.
