Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The sweet 2015 Cantocuerdas Moscatel Dulce, produced with the grapes from one single vineyard planted some 45 years ago at 720 meters altitude on sandy granite soils close to a water stream where grapes ripen without over-ripeness. It achieved 15.4% alcohol and some 66 grams of unfermented sugar. It aged in used barrels for 15 months. The balsamic nose, redolent of bay leaf with something creamy that made me think that it was going to have something bitter, despite the notes of honey, orange blossom and Moscatel pulp and that minty note that adds freshness. The palate felt very balanced, with freshness to compensate the sugar, it feels like a very good year for this characterful sweet wine. 1,000 half-liter bottles produced.

Features

Description

Cantocuerdas Moscatel is an exquisite example of what the Moscatel de Grano Menudo variety has to offer, with a winemaking and ageing process that enhances its natural characteristics and makes it an excellent choice for those looking for a sweet white wine from the Vinos de Madrid region.

Winemaking

Cantocuerdas Moscatel is made from Moscatel grapes from vineyards over 55 years old, which gives it a unique richness and complexity. It all begins with a cold pre-fermentation maceration that is carried out for 40 hours, followed by a maceration with the skins for 30 hours. Fermentations are carried out at low temperatures and, throughout the ageing process, the wine is kept in contact with the fermentation lees, without batonage. The wine is aged for 10 months in 500-litre French oak barrels.

Taste

Cantocuerdas Moscatel is characterised by its aromatic complexity. On the nose, it has clean and intense aromas of apricot, baked apple and peach. On the palate, its entry is fresh and pleasant, with a perfect balance that makes it oily and unctuous, and with a persistence that leaves a lasting impression on the palate. In addition, its pale, bright golden colour is a delight to the eye. It is a naturally sweet wine, ideal for pairing with desserts, nuts, nougat, polvorones and marzipan.
