Description

At the foot of Montserrat, where the mountain seems to watch over every row like a secular sanctuary, Ca n'Estruc Idoia Negre was born out of an uncomfortable decision: to harvest by variety and by date, even if it means more passes and lower yields, to capture the precise character of each plot. The winery operates organically and views the land as a moral contract: intervening only as much as necessary and listening as much as possible. This red wine from the D.O. Catalunya blends 51% Garnacha Tinta, 41% Syrah and 8% Cariñena, with mostly estate-grown grapes (and a portion from managed vineyards) on alluvial clay-limestone soils with gravel at 165 m. Here the Mediterranean caresses, but Montserrat imposes a thermal contrast: this tension translates into a fragrant, straightforward wine, with a subtle minerality and an elegance that is not immediately obvious for its latitude.

Vinification

At Ca n'Estruc Idoia Negre, the harvest is carried out by hand and selection takes place in the vineyard. Destemming and fermentation take place in stainless steel tanks (100–200 hl) with indigenous yeasts, at 21–28 °C, with daily pumping over. After alcoholic fermentation, the wine is racked and undergoes spontaneous malolactic fermentation in the same tanks at 18–20 °C. The wine is aged for 12 months in 225-litre French Allier oak barrels, medium toasted and from various cooperages.

Taste

In Ca n'Estruc Idoia Negre, the wine displays a brilliant ruby colour with garnet highlights. The nose is fragrant and deep: black fruit (blackberry, plum), violets and a hint of black pepper and clove, with a smoky undertone. On the palate, this barrel-aged red wine has a full-bodied texture: polished tannins, a juicy core and a refreshing acidity that keeps it lively. The oak contributes fine cocoa and sweet spices without overpowering the fruit. The finish is long and seductive, with spicy notes and a hint of earthiness and minerality that invites you to take another sip. Ideal for pairing with grilled meats, charcuterie and pasta, served between 14 and 16°C.
