The nose of the 2023 Albariño Cepas Vellas is very austere, and it took a long time in the glass to take off. It has lower alcohol and more contained ripeness than its siblings, with a brighter color and a higher-pitched palate, serious and austere, like liquid granite to me. This is pure elegance and finesse in a year of great balance. 9,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in August 2024, a little later than the other 2023s. It should be very long lived.

Description

Albariño Do Ferreiro Cepas Vellas is a white wine made exclusively from Albariño grapes by Gerardo Méndez in D.O. Rías Baixas.
The grapes used to make this wine come from vines so old that some of them are even 200 years old. The vineyards occupy less than one hectare and are planted on sandy soils with granitic bedrock.

Winemaking

The grapes are harvested by hand. Once in the winery, they are destemmed and undergo cold maceration. The grapes are then pressed and the must ferments at the foot of the vat.
Finally, the wine rests on its own fine lees for 12 months in stainless steel tanks.

Taste

Albariño Do Ferreiro Cepas Vellas is an aromatic white wine with intense fruit and citrus. With floral and mineral expressions and a saline background. On the palate it has a long, dense and silky finish. Due to its excellent acidity it is fresh, balanced and saline on the finish, an Albariño with extraordinary purity!
