Buy Wine from Bodegas y Viñedos Alión
Bodegas y Viñedos Alión is located in the heart of the Ribera del Duero, just 15 kilometres from the emblematic Vega Sicilia. This winery, whose name pays homage to the León council of Alión, birthplace of the patriarch of the Álvarez family, is located between the course of the Duero River and the road linking Valladolid with Soria, in the vicinity of Peñafiel, the region's wine capital.
Alión's current winemaker is Gonzalo Iturriaga de Juan, who joined the Tempos Vega Sicilia group in 2015. Prior to his arrival, Iturriaga accumulated valuable experience in various renowned wineries, bringing a fresh and contemporary vision to the Alión project.
Vineyards
Alión has a total of 130 hectares of vineyards, distributed in three main blocks: 70 hectares in the Vega Sicilia estate; 30 hectares in Padilla de Duero, where the winery is located; and 30 hectares in Pesquera de Duero.
The diversity of soils is one of Alión's riches. These soils have been shaped by three sedimentary environments: fluvial, colluvial and eolian. Deep, well-drained soils predominate, with coarse textures and reddish or white tones, alternating with finer layers of brownish colours and abundant quartzite gravels, testimony to its alluvial origin. This composition ensures excellent water and nutrient retention, favouring the balanced development of the vines and optimum ripening of the grapes.
The climate of Ribera del Duero is characterised by harsh winters and hot summers, with marked temperature fluctuations between day and night. These conditions, together with the altitude of the vineyards, contribute to obtaining high quality grapes, essential for the production of Alión wines.
Philosophy
Alión 's philosophy focuses on making wines that reflect the essence of Ribera del Duero, combining tradition and modernity. We work exclusively with the Tinto Fino grape variety, harvested by hand in 12 kg boxes and subjected to a rigorous selection process in the winery.
Fermentation is carried out in temperature-controlled wooden vats in order to achieve a polyphenolic extraction that gives colour and structure to the wine. The ageing, which lasts between 12 and 14 months, is carried out in new French oak Bordeaux barrels from the most prestigious Bordeaux cooperages. After this period, the wine rests in the bottle for at least 15 months, allowing the primary aromas of the fruit to integrate with the nuances provided by the ageing in wood.
The result is a fleshy, complex and intense wine, where elegance is the winery's hallmark. Alión seeks to offer a contemporary interpretation of Ribera del Duero, always maintaining an unwavering commitment to quality and authenticity.
At Alión, each bottle is the fruit of meticulous dedication and a passion for wine that is transmitted in every sip, inviting wine lovers to discover and enjoy the richness and diversity of Ribera del Duero.
