Description
From the limestone slopes surrounding the village of Gueberschwihr, birthplace of the Humbrecht family in Alsace, comes Zind Humbrecht Riesling Roche Calcaire, a wine that reflects with mineral precision the vision of a winery that honours its roots and cultivates character. The vines, planted in the 1960s and 1970s by Olivier Humbrecht's father, sit on young, deep limestone soils, geological formations that retain water and heat up slowly, delaying ripening and allowing for firm, natural acidity. The biodynamic philosophy that guides Domaine Zind Humbrecht seeks to intervene as little as possible and let the vineyard speak: here the soil is not a stage, but the protagonist. The Alsatian climate - continental, with good thermal amplitude - accentuates the tension and purity of the Riesling, which is expressed here with a luminous austerity.
Winemaking
The Zind Humbrecht Riesling Roche Calcaire is harvested by hand, with a careful selection of healthy, well-ripened bunches. Pressing is gentle and prolonged, followed by natural clarification by decanting. Fermentation, always slow, takes place with indigenous yeasts in large neutral oak vats, where it is also aged for 12 months on fine lees. This slow process favours aromatic precision, the integration of acidity and the purest expression of the chalky soil. No artifice or ornamentation is sought: the wine evolves at its own pace, unhurriedly, revealing its character over time.
Taste
On the nose, Zind Humbrecht Riesling Roche Calcaire is pure and defined: lemon zest, green apple, white grapefruit and a marked note of wet stone reminiscent of a quarry after rain. There is no overt sweetness or floral exuberance; there is tension, austerity and a mineral background that dominates the scene. On the palate, the acidity is vibrant, linear, almost electric, supporting a precise texture that evokes chalk and salt. The finish is dry, long, with an echo of green citrus and a lingering saline trace. It is a serious wine, for those who seek depth, verticality and mineral authenticity in every sip.
