Description
Ridge Geyserville is an exquisite representation of Ridge Vineyards' winemaking tradition. Produced in the Geyserville vineyard, located in the Alexander Valley, this wine is a blend of several grape varieties: 69% Zinfandel, 20% Carignan, 8% Petit Syrah, 2% Alicante Bouschet and 1% Mataro. These grapes are grown in three contiguous vineyards, all characterised by an ancient landslide of the Russian River that deposited gravel and river stones on the site.
Winemaking
The winemaking of this wine is a testament to Ridge Vineyards' minimal intervention philosophy. The grapes are hand harvested, destemmed and crushed. Fermentation is carried out with indigenous yeasts, followed by full malolactic fermentation with naturally occurring bacteria. The wine benefits from ageing in air-dried American oak barrels, with a variety of barrels of different ages: 20% new, 15% one year old, 20% two years old, 25% three years old, 15% four years old and 5% five years old. After thirteen months in barrels, the wine is filtered before bottling.
Taste
Ridge Geyserville is characterised by aromatic notes of ripe blueberry and cassis. On the palate, dark fruit intertwined with hints of cocoa and clove stand out. Vibrant acidity balances perfectly with the opulence of the fruit, leading to a long, elegant finish. It is a wine that, although it can be enjoyed young, promises to evolve and delight for the next decade or more.
