Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The bright golden-colored 2017 Manuel Raventós Negra has a complex nose of baked apples, spicy and nuanced. This is the personal selection that Manuel Raventós makes from the best wines each vintage to produce age-worthy wines. In 2017, which started wet and finished warm and dry, it was produced with 70% Xarel.lo and 20% Macabeo from vines that were already certified organic. It fermented in stainless steel and was kept with the lees in concrete for nine months, after which time, it was put in bottle to referment and age with lees for no less than 70 months. It has a beautiful, developed nose, obviously more oxidative but time has given it great complexity and elegance. The bubbles have integrated and shrunk in size and quantity, giving it a silky texture—texture more than anything. It only has 1.6 grams of residual sugar and finishes dry and long. It's a wine that gives a lot of pleasure. 2,125 bottles and 158 magnums produced. It was disgorged in November 2024, the bottling date printed on the back label.

Description
The idea of creating Raventós i Blanc Manuel Raventós was born from Raventós i Blanc 's desire to express an intimate and precise vision of his estate in the Conca del Riu Anoia. Since 1497, the Raventós family has been cultivating these lands with an almost ritualistic connection to the landscape. This cuvée does not follow a pre-established pattern: it is the result of a meditated choice of plots, the fruit of a patient, sensory, almost intuitive journey. In each vintage, Manuel selects only the vines that best embody his concept of purity, depth and elegance.
Raventós i Blanc Manuel Raventós is composed of a classic but refined blend: 70% Xarel-lo and 30% Macabeo, indigenous varieties grown on soils with a chalky matrix, with exposure and altitude that allow for slow and balanced ripening. The Xarel.lo provides structure and tension, an austere and firm backbone; the Macabeo adds aromatic finesse, fullness and delicacy on the palate.
Winemaking
The viticulture that gives rise to Raventós i Blanc Manuel Raventós is practised according to biodynamic principles, with spontaneous plant cover, own compost and phytotherapeutic treatments. The vines are goblet-pruned and low yields are used to preserve the natural concentration of the fruit. The grapes are harvested by hand, with rigorous selection in the field and in the cellar. The varieties are vinified separately and fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks.
Raventós i Blanc Manuel Raventós undergoes secondary fermentation in the bottle and remains in the bottle for six years, without the addition of expedition liqueur. It is a brut nature of dry and mineral vocation, without make-up, designed to express with precision the character of the terroir.
Taste
Aromatically, Raventós i Blanc Manuel Raventós displays a restrained elegance: notes of fresh butter, fine brioche, dried lemon peel and wet chalk. The bubbles are subtle, perfectly integrated, barely a whisper that articulates the structure without imposing itself. The palate is firm, linear, with a sharp acidity that adds tension and lengthens the length.
The texture is silky but precise, with a saline background that recalls the limestone of its origin. The finish is long, slightly bitter, with echoes of raw almonds and dried herbs. There are no concessions to sweetness or exuberance: everything is restrained, directed, refined.
Raventós i Blanc Manuel Raventós does not seek easy applause. It is a work of patience, of listening to the landscape and of absolute respect for the grape. A signature wine, essential and silent, that speaks softly but remains in the memory for a long time.
