Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The latest rendition of the NV Brut Rosé Royale Réserve is based on the 2019 vintage and was disgorged in March 2023 with nine grams per liter. Revealing a fresh, fruity bouquet with aromas of strawberries, rose petals, menthol and pastry, it’s medium to full-bodied, vinous and generous with a gourmand mid-palate and a long, saline finish.

Features

Description

Philipponnat Royale Réserve Rosé Brut is a high-end champagne, made mainly from Pinot Noir (75%), complemented with Chardonnay (20%) and Pinot Meunier (5%). These grapes come from the prestigious Grand and Premier Cru vineyards of the Champagne region, with a significant part of the vines located in the historic Mareuil-sur-Ay, owned by the Philipponnat family since the 16th century. The soils of the region are rich in limestone, which favours the production of wines with great freshness and structure.

Winemaking

The winemaking process follows traditional methods to preserve the freshness of the grapes and avoid premature oxidation. Part of the wine is fermented in wooden barrels, and 7-8% of Pinot Noir red wine is added to give it its characteristic pink colour. Ageing takes place on the lees for three years in underground cellars at 12°C, much longer than the legal minimum required for champagnes. With a moderate dosage of 9 grams per litre, this rosé maintains a perfect balance between freshness, fruit and vinosity.

Taste

On the palate, Philipponnat Royale Réserve Rosé Brut has an elegant and pure attack, with a full and generous sensation. Its well-integrated acidity gives it a vibrant freshness, while a slight astringency highlights the fruity nuances. The predominant aromas are of wild strawberries, cherries and citrus notes such as grapefruit, which evolve into more complex tones over time.
It is an ideal champagne to accompany smoked fish, cold meats such as ham, and red fruit desserts. Moreover, although it is fully enjoyed in its youth, it has excellent ageing potential, allowing its complexity to be enjoyed for several years.
