Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The Barossa has the ability to convey a sense of place, dirt and air in the glass. The trick is to not get in the way—a cooper does not terroir make. Despite not being the dominant region in this blend (for specificity; McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Padthaway and Clare Valley), the Barossa makes a potent contribution. Here, in the 2020 Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz, the concentrated, dry and warm vintage is on show and provides a splay of earthy, dense fruit, stretched over a framework of savory tannin. Despite Penfolds's reputation for big tannins/big oak, the fruit here overpowers both and streams out over the long finish. The heart of Barossa is here. Very good. Will get better.

Features

Description

Penfolds Bin 28 Shiraz is an iconic example of warm-climate Australian Shiraz: ripe, robust and generously flavoured. First made in 1959, it was originally named after the famous Barossa Valley Kalimna vineyard, acquired by Penfolds in 1945, from which the wine originated. Today, Bin 28 is a blend of multiple regions and vineyards, but the Barossa Valley is always prominently represented. The grape variety used is Shiraz.
In terms of winemaking and ageing, this wine comes from several regions: McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Padthaway and Clare Valley. The wine is aged for 12 months in American oak barrels, 16% of which are new.

Taste

Penfolds Bin 28 Shiraz has a black ruby and plum colour, with a magenta rim. On the nose, notes of blackcurrant, black plum, ironstone, cocoa powder, dark chocolate and cola are discernible. It also highlights chocolate cake garnished with candied cherries and North African spices such as 'Ras El Hanout', including paprika, cinnamon, pepper, cloves and fennel. On the palate, it is always honest, warm and approachable. You can taste dense, rich notes of chocolate cake, cinnamon syrup with poached red cherries, coconut shavings, milk chocolate, and even a hint of Bounty bar. There are also flavours of summer plum pudding with currants and crème anglaise, marrow broth, Vietnamese Phò, and a complexity and texture layered with earthy spice. The tannins are enveloping and chewy, with acidity reminiscent of cherry.
