Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The very young unoaked red 2021 Rayos Uva looks for fruit-driven aromatics showcasing the approachability of Rioja Baja, where the wines can be juicy and tasty. It was produced with a blend of 40% each Garnacha and Tempranillo and 20% Graciano, quite different from the wines from the past, with 13.5% alcohol and good freshness and balance. It fermented destemmed and was kept in tank until bottling. It's very primary, a little reductive, young, fresh and juicy, with notes of berries and herbs and a light and fresh palate that makes it very pleasant and easy to drink. Volume has grown (to 130,000 bottles) and so has the quality! There are three or four bottlings from the same master blend.
Rayos Uva is an entry level wine. Its cost is not very high, so it is the perfect piece to get to know the winemaking style of these wineries. It comes from La Rioja Oriental, specifically from Aldeanueva de Ebro. The wine incorporates a tasty, smooth and light structure, which means that it is quite pleasant.
The vineyards are cultivated at a considerable altitude, at least 650 metres above sea level, and the soils are calcareous-sandy. These factors give it power and a lot of freshness.
Its process includes Garnacha 50%, Tempranillo 25% and Graciano25%, a coupage that has been modified with respect to other vintages. Of course, its fruity and delicious character is maintained, although the Graciano stands out.
The grapes are destemmed and cold macerated, and aged for 5 months in steel tanks, concrete tanks and on well-worked lees.
Rayos Uva stands out for its varied notes, freshness, pungency and fruit character. It is a strong wine, with an elongated finish; the graciano is the protagonist of its flavour, which gives it a rather complex aroma, a wine suitable for a casual occasion!
A very refined entry-level wine
Once you uncork it, you notice its essence endowed with special touches given by excellent grapes, grown without chemical fertilisers. The result is tasty, pure, interesting and enjoyable to drink. Therefore, it can be said that it is a wine that will fascinate the followers of an acid and fresh wine.
And you, what are you waiting for to try it?
