Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The white 2023 Redoma Branco has a Burgundian profile. They work with vines in the zone of Murça and Porrais on slate and granite soils, with a mixture of varieties. The full clusters were pressed, and the juice fermented in 228- and 500-liter barrels where it matured with the lees for six months. In 2023, the harvest was quite long, aiming at ripeness between 11.5% and 12.5%, and this year the bottled wine finished at 12% alcohol, slightly lower than in 2022. It has clean and expressive aromas of white fruit, flowers, spice and a touch of smoke and a very tasty, harmonious and precise palate. A little lighter and fresher than the 2022, it should age nicely. They produce around 70,000 bottles of this. It was bottled in March-April 2023.

Features

Description

Niepoort Redoma Branco comes from old vineyards located at altitudes between 400 and 700 metres with a blend of traditional Douro varieties. The main ones are Rabigato and Códega, but others such as Donzelinho, Viosinho and Arinto are also included. These vineyards, with an average age of between 15 and 70 years, benefit from a cooler and longer ripening period due to their altitude, resulting in grapes of excellent quality.

Winemaking

After careful selection, the grapes are pressed and, one day later, the must is racked into barrels where it comes into contact with its lees until bottling. It is important to note that none of the barrels undergo malolactic fermentation, which helps to preserve the freshness and aromas of the wine. The wine is aged for 15 months in French oak barrels, which gives it a unique complexity and structure.

Taste

Redoma Branco stands out for its balance and medium concentration. It presents a good combination of fat and acidity, culminating in a fresh and long finish. It is undoubtedly a wine designed to accompany food, being particularly suitable for fish, seafood and certain types of cheese. Its tasting notes reveal intense citrus aromas, apricot and mineral nuances, with a complexity that evokes the essence of the Douro terroir.
