Description
In the heart of Valdeorras, where the Sil meanders between steep slopes and morning mists that dampen the slate and granite soils, the Viña Somoza project was born: a winery that understands neither concessions nor easy roads. The history of Neno de Viña Somoza begins as a gesture of loyalty to the terroir, to the old Godello vines that survive from impossible terraces. It was in 2001 when the García Rodríguez family decided to recover forgotten plots, many at altitude, where the Godello expresses itself with tension, verticality and an almost Atlantic elegance.
The current style of Neno de Viña Somoza was forged with the incorporation of winemaker Javier García Alonso, also known for his work at 4 Monos Viticultores, who brought a precise, clean, minimal intervention approach to the project. Under his guidance, the wine gained in tension and clarity without losing authenticity. The grapes come from plots between 400 and 700 metres above sea level, on slate and granite soils. The continental climate with Atlantic influences, the cold winters and the wide temperature range give the wine character and freshness.
Winemaking
The production of Neno de Viña Somoza begins with a manual harvest, in small boxes of 15 kg, to protect the integrity of the fruit. On arrival at the winery, the grapes undergo a cold skin maceration of between 12 and 48 hours, which adds aromatic complexity. Subsequently, the grapes are gently pressed and naturally racked. The must ferments spontaneously with indigenous yeasts, respecting the character of each plot.
The fermentation of Neno de Viña Somoza is carried out in a combination of stainless steel tanks, French oak vats and used barrels, where the wine is also aged. The ageing lasts less than a year on fine lees, without battonage, seeking to preserve the freshness, structure and texture characteristic of Altura Godello.
Taste
On the nose, Neno de Viña Somoza is restrained and mineral: warm slate, lemon zest, dried flower, fennel and an electric salinity. There is no easy perfume. The palate is dry, sharp, with an acidity that pushes the wine in a straight line towards a long, typically mineral finish. Notes of grapefruit, raw almond and a chalky texture appear. It is a serious wine, for those who are looking for tension and purity.
Neno de Viña Somoza is one of the most authentic expressions of Godello in Valdeorras, ideal for pairing with raw fish, seafood or Asian cuisine. A white wine that defies standards and rewards those who know how to listen to its restrained minerality.
