Luis Seabra Mono C 2021

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2021 Mono C is the only varietal Castelão from Douro. 'It's an allowed variety in Douro, but this comes from the only Castelão vineyard I know in the region,' Seabra told me. It has a paler color and a higher-pitched nose, with notes of red berries and spices, something earthy and a touch of rusticity. The palate is medium-bodied with some grainy tannins and freshness, a lighter Douro with less color and tannins. It fermented in concrete and matured in concrete and 2,500-liter Italian oak foudre. Some of the wines are not approved by the appellation, and this is one of them. With time in the glass, the balsamic note is more moderate, and it becomes more elegant and floral.

Description
Luis Seabra's Mono C is a wine that has captured the attention of wine lovers and connoisseurs alike. Seabra focuses on one particular variety: Castelão. Although this grape is typically found further south in Portugal, Luis has discovered a single varietal parcel of this light-skinned grape in the Douro and is working to create a wine of unparalleled finesse and elegance. It is a unique exploration of one of the most widely planted red varieties in southern Portugal. Although rare to find in the Douro, under Seabra's supervision, this variety shows a less soft and alcoholic profile than is typically presented.
Winemaking
Mono C is fermented on whole bunches in stainless steel tanks using only indigenous yeasts. It undergoes a one-month cold maceration and is aged in used 500-litre barrels on lees for 18 months before bottling.
Taste
Mono C has lively aromas of red and blue fruits, overlaid with a distinctive mineral note of shale. On the palate, it is bright and energetic, with tart cherry, plum and tart blueberry wrapped in floral and mineral tones. Mouth-watering acidity and soft leathery tannins provide lovely balance to the fruit.
