Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The pink colored NV Rosé de Meunier Extra Brut is an old vine selection of Pinot Meunier that fermented in small and large oak barrels. It opens with a pure, but intense raspberry and red currant fruit on the nose, which leads to a pretty dry, tightly-woven and persistent Rosé; it has a delicate mousse and some nice tannins in the aftertaste. It's pure, fresh and stimulating; it does well as an aperitif, as well as with lighter dishes based on white meat and also cheese. This sample was disgorged in October 2015 with 2.5 grams of dosage, but no indication of the used vintage(s) has been given on the back label.

Description

The story of Laherte Frères Rosé de Meunier Extra Brut is the story of a courageous bet on the unusual. In a region where Chardonnay and Pinot Noir dominate, Aurelien Laherte decided to bring Pinot Meunier to the forefront, a historically secondary variety, but capable of deeply expressing the character of the Vallée de la Marne. The vines, more than 30 years old, grow in clay-limestone soils, cultivated in a way that respects nature and is influenced by organic principles. The result is a ripe, precise grape that gives life to a wine that seeks - and achieves - a balance between fruit, structure and freshness. In a difficult vintage, Aurelien refused to harvest early, despite commercial pressure. He waited. And that decision marked the philosophy of this cuvée: let the vineyard do the talking.

Winemaking

The Laherte Frères Rosé de Meunier Extra Brut cuvée, made exclusively from 100% Pinot Meunier, is built on a technical and expressive blend: 30% short-maceration grapes, 10% separately vinified red wine, and 60% white wine base, including 40% barrel-aged reserve wines. The grapes are harvested by hand, using a traditional gentle press. Fermentation takes place in a combination of tanks, vats and barrels, with partial malolactic fermentation, and the wine rests for at least 24 months on fine lees before bottling. Disgorging is done by hand, and the dosage is minimal: 2.5 g/L, aiming for transparency and purity.

Taste

In the glass, Laherte Frères Rosé de Meunier Extra Brut reveals a vibrant yet delicate aromatic profile: raspberry, cranberry, candied orange peel and a hint of menthol rise against a background of wet chalk. On the palate, it is taut and linear, with a very fine bubble that highlights its energy. Notes of pink grapefruit, sour cherry and pomegranate intertwine with a creamy, mineral texture. The finish is dry, with saline echoes, subtle herbaceousness and a persistence that speaks of its precision and character. This is not an easy Champagne: it is pure nerve, for those who seek depth, precision and emotion in every sip.
