Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2023 Frühlingsplätzchen GG impresses with a dense and intense nose of perfectly ripe and spicy (pear) fruit. Dense and quite powerful on the palate, this is very rich but currently less finessed and frisky than usual. It takes time to transform its suppleness into elegance and finesse. When I told Frank Schönleber of my findings, he was surprised. He bottled a fresh and savory Frühlingsplätzchen, he said. In autumn, I will taste all his 2023s in a new context and update my note (and eventually also the score). This is a great Riesling. Tasted at the Vorpremiere VDP.Grosses Gewächs in Wiesbaden in August 2024.

Features

Description

In the picturesque region of Nahe, Germany, where the vineyards blend into the landscape of rolling hills and stony soils, a wine is born that captures the essence of its land: Emrich-Schönleber Frühlingsplätzchen Großes Gewächs.
Behind this name that resonates with history and tradition is the Schönleber family, who have been perfecting the art of making Rieslings of pure, vibrant character for generations.
The vineyards of Frühlingsplätzchen rest on soils of red slate, blue slate and quartzite, elements that lend the grapes an electrifying minerality. The result? A wine that speaks of its origin with every sip.

Winemaking

In the winery, the philosophy is simple: let nature do its work. The grapes are gently pressed, fermentation occurs spontaneously in oak barrels, and the wine rests on its fine lees until summer. This process allows Emrich-Schönleber Frühlingsplätzchen GG to develop an enveloping texture and fascinating aromatic complexity.

Taste

From the very first moment, Emrich-Schönleber Frühlingsplätzchen GG seduces with its aromatic intensity. Imagine opening a basket full of red and white currants, mixed with a handful of spring flowers and a subtle hint of orange peel. The nose is pure freshness and elegance.
On the palate, the acidity is vibrant, like that spark that awakens the senses. The saline minerality comes through, reminding us of the influence of those rocky soils, while a long, spicy finish leaves an unforgettable sensation. Emrich-Schönleber Frühlingsplätzchen GG is a wine that changes in the glass, that evolves with time, that begs to be explored without haste.
If you have ever wanted to understand what makes a Riesling great, this is a good place to start. It is not just a wine, it is a conversation between the land, time and the drinker.
