Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

A new lieu-dit or paraje red wine, the 2022 Peña la Mora 1er was produced from old-vine Garnacha from 1.17 hectares at 1,200 meters in altitude and a northern exposure on granite soils in the village of Navatalgordo. This is where El Tamboril is, so it has some commonalities and is concentrated, with some meaty notes, yeasts and red cherries. It has the grainy, somewhat Italian tannins from the Navatalgordo village, with freshness that feels unusual for 2022. It's a wine with more intensity (from the cold, it has more polyphenols), but the wine is also cooler, reflecting the higher altitude. It takes time glass to open up in the glass. 4,239 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2024.

Features

Description

Comando G Peña La Mora 1er is an organic red wine produced by Comando G, a project led by winemakers Fernando García and Dani Landi. Both are known for their dedication to Garnacha, the variety that makes up 100% of this wine. The vineyard is located in Navatalgordo, in the Sierra de Gredos, at high altitude. The vines have an average age of 75 years, which gives a remarkable depth and character to the wine. The soils are granitic and sandy, with a high quartz content, which favours the freshness and minerality of the wines.

Winemaking

Comando G Peña La Mora 1er was made by gentle maceration for two months, without overpumping or aggressive extractions, allowing for a pure expression of the Garnacha grape. The ageing was carried out for 16 months in large oak and concrete vats of 10 and 20 hectolitres, highlighting the balance between fruit and wood, without losing the identity of the terroir.

Taste

Comando G Peña La Mora stands out for its austere and elegant profile. On the palate, fresh red fruit flavours, such as raspberry and cherry, accompanied by floral notes reminiscent of violets. The minerality of the granitic terroir is reflected in a saline touch that adds freshness, perfectly balancing its medium body and lively acidity. The finish is long and persistent, with fine, well-integrated tannins, leaving a smooth sensation that invites you to enjoy it slowly.
