Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2022 Mölsheim Riesling 1G opens with a very delicate and refined bouquet with chalky lemon fruit aromas. If you like Chablis—and who doesn't?—and like to find Chablis in Riesling, this is your wine! Even without this bizarre passion, this is delicious Riesling from an excellent limestone terroir in the Zellertal. The acidity is so finely grained and silky and the finish enormously salty. The fruit is elegant and juicy but very fine, as are the tannins. 12% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in July 2023.

Features

Description

Battenfeld Spanier Mölsheim Riesling Trocken is a white wine classified by the winery as Premier Cru that reflects the essence of the municipality of Mölsheim.

Winemaking

The Riesling grapes for Mölsheim come from the Erste Lage vineyards, which are characterised by first-class vineyards with unique properties. These vineyards are situated at a considerable altitude, which makes them cooler in comparison to the Hohen-Sülzen vineyards. The grapes benefit from poor, rocky soils, mainly composed of lime with a light humus layer. Thanks to the fresh winds of the Donnersberg massif, the grapes ripen well aerated, resulting in wines with a crystalline, fresh character and a deep minerality. After being harvested by hand, the grapes ferment spontaneously and the wine matures in large wooden barrels until the following spring, resting on its fine lees.
The wine has an alcohol content of 12.0% VOL., an acidity of 7.5 G/L, a natural cork closure, a residual sugar content of 3.0 G/L and is certified organic.

Taste

Mölsheim Riesling Trocken stands out for its radiant yellow colour. The nose is disciplined, with fruit in the background and predominantly saline notes reminiscent of wet stone, complemented by subtle herbal notes. On the palate, it is rocky and austere, a faithful representative of the soils in which it has grown. It has a tense entry, with great internal tension and density. The fruit is secondary, enhancing the saline character of this structured wine. With a touch of bitter phenolics, this wine promises to evolve beautifully over time, offering a multi-dimensional taste experience. It is an ideal accompaniment to dishes such as monkfish or turbot with beurre blanc and green asparagus.
