Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2022 Hohen-Sülzen Riesling 1G opens with a clear, ripe and elegant, if still reductive bouquet that represents the limestone terroirs. Fermented in double stücks and 3,000-liter oak casks, this is a medium-bodied, firm and tannic Riesling that is a bit drying on the finish if not aerated. 12% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in July 2023.

Description
Battenfeld Spanier Hohen-Sülzen Riesling Trocken comes from first-class vineyards, characterised by their unique properties.
Winemaking
Hohen-Sülzen is located in the Eisbachtal valley, a place where the mountain stream rises from the Donnersberg massif, exerting a significant climatic influence on the valley. This geographical location allows for a greater amplitude between day and night temperatures compared to other regions, which ensures that, despite the high ripeness of the grapes, the wines retain their freshness, elegance and tension. The vines of this wine grow in pure limestone with a generous layer of loess, which gives them a distinctive character marked by ripe fruit, delicate spicy flavour and filigree acidity. In terms of winemaking, this wine has been selectively harvested by hand, spontaneously fermented and aged in oak vats.
Taste
Light yellow in colour with green highlights and a silver rim. Its aroma is a combination of yellow fruits such as peach, dried apricots and plums, followed by distinctive spicy notes reminiscent of dried herbs, light tobacco, bay leaf and mild spices such as nutmeg flower and white pepper. On the palate, it is clean and combines ripe, juicy fruit with a spicy flavour and a deeply smoky minerality.
Its freshness and precision make it ideal to accompany a wide variety of fish dishes, from sushi to a colourful wok vegetable medley.
