Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2018 Sancerre Génération Dix-Neuf (XIX) opens with a very clear, pure and, given the warm and dry vintage, beautifully fresh and mineral-scented bouquet with flinty and yeasty notes intermingled with white fruit aromas. Generously fruity but also salty, pure and tensioned on the palate, this is a full-bodied and elegant but thrilling 2018 Sancerre with a spectacularly long and iodine-laced finish. 13% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in January 2022.

Features

Description

Alphonse Mellot Génération XIX is a sublime expression of French viticulture and oenology. Hailing from the prestigious Sancerre region, this white wine is made exclusively from Sauvignon Blanc, a variety that stands out for its freshness and aromatic complexity. The Génération XIX cuvée comes from old vines from La Moussière, with an average age of 87 years, which gives the wine a unique concentration and depth.

Winemaking

The production of Alphonse Mellot Génération XIX follows a meticulous and environmentally friendly process. The grapes are harvested in small 25 kg crates to guarantee their integrity and are carefully selected on a sorting table. Vinification begins with pressing, followed by static racking at low temperature. Fermentation takes place in 900-litre truncated cone-shaped vats, which allows for a subtle integration of flavours and aromas.
Ageing is carried out on fine lees for a period that varies according to the vintage, generally between 10 and 12 months. This process enriches the wine, giving it a more complex texture and greater longevity.

Taste

Alphonse Mellot Génération XIX is a wine that captivates from the first sip. Its bouquet is a harmonious blend of maturity and freshness, with notes of honey, lemon, acacia, dried fruits and a touch of iodised mineral. With aeration, it is enriched with nuances of beeswax, gingerbread and minty lemon.
On the palate, the wine is full and fresh, with a surprising richness and virility. The entry is frank, wrapped in a smooth texture that is perfectly balanced by the acidity. The mid-palate, reserved initially, opens up to toasted hazelnut flavours. The finish is rich, exploding into a lively freshness that enhances the iodised mineral character, followed by a slight vegetal bitterness that lingers for a long time.
This wine is an example of balance between richness and firmness, evolution and freshness, making it an exceptional choice for connoisseurs and lovers of good wine.
