Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The perfumed 2017 Fincas is a blend of ancestral varieties—Caíño and Sousón. It has moderate ripeness for a warm year like 2017 (13% alcohol) and a soft mouthfeel with some chalky tannins. 3,000 bottles were filled in August 2019.

Features

Description

The Algueira Fincas red wine is a unique expression of Galician viticulture, noted for its meticulous winemaking and ageing. This wine is composed of the Caíño and Sousón varieties, known for their distinctive Atlantic profile.

Winemaking

The elaboration of Algueira Fincas follows a traditional process, where the grapes are trodden by foot in 300 litre wooden barrels. Fermentation takes place in the same barrels without yeast inoculation, allowing the wine to develop its character naturally. The wine is aged for 11 months in French oak barrels, which contributes to its complexity and structure.

Taste

Algueira Fincas is a true representation of its terroir. The wine has a garnet red colour with a violet rim, indicative of its freshness and vitality. On the nose, balsamic notes of menthol, red fruit and orange mould stand out, providing exceptional aromatic complexity. Its spicy character is reminiscent of the Galician Atlantic forest, with oak and nettle inflorescences. On the palate, Algueira Fincas reveals itself as a fresh and acidic wine, with a crisp, citric and persistent tannin. This taste profile is complemented by a fleshy finish, which leaves a lasting and satisfying impression.
In summary, Algueira Fincas is a wine that encapsulates the essence of the Ribeira Sacra, with a careful winemaking process and a flavour that reflects its Atlantic origin. Its combination of indigenous varieties, traditional winemaking methods and ageing in French oak make it an exceptional choice for wine lovers seeking a unique and authentic sensory experience.
