Álvaro Castro Tinto Reserva 2017

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2016 Tinto, the white label with the big 'Dão,' is a roughly equal blend of Jaen, Touriga Nacional and Alfrocheiro with 10% Tinta Roriz, aged for 16 months in well-used French barriques. It comes in at 13.1% alcohol. As lovely as the Saes Touriga was at a similar price level, this adds better structure, although it lacks the Touriga's aromatic charm and flavors. Differently styled, they both offer a lot of value in wines made to drink young that nonetheless have some distinction, finesse and class. While it may hold well for a decade, drinking it in the short to mid-term is a good idea.

Description
Álvaro Castro Tinto Reserva is made mainly from Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz and Jaen grapes. Vinification is carried out in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature, followed by malolactic fermentation in French oak barrels. Subsequently, the wine rests in these barrels for a period of between 14 and 16 months, depending on the vintage.
Taste
Álvaro Castro Tinto Reserva is characterised by its aromatic intensity, with predominant notes of ripe red fruit and a touch of spices that give it great complexity. On the palate, it is smooth, with outstanding freshness and well-integrated ripe tannins, culminating in a long, appetising finish. Great elegance and structure on the palate are a constant in Álvaro Castro wines, and this reserve wine is no exception.
