Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2016 Tinto (Quinta da Pellada), the estate flagship with Quinta da Pellada on the label, is a field blend (over 40 grapes) from old vines. It is principally, for identified grapes, Alvarelhão, Tinta Pinheira and Tinta Amarela. Plus, since 1991, Castro uses some Jaen and Touriga Nacional. It was aged for 24 months in well-used French barriques (five to seven years old) and comes in at 13.3% alcohol.

Features

Description

The winemaking tradition manifests itself with great splendour in the Quinta da Pellada wine. Produced in old vineyards that are 71 years old, this wine comes from a density of approximately 5,000 plants per hectare, located at an altitude of 550 metres. The soil on which these grapes are grown is predominantly granitic, but also has clay and sand, which gives the wine its unique characteristics. These vineyards are pruned using the Guyot method.

Winemaking

The Quinta da Pellada wine is distinguished for being a 100% old vines wine with a blend of indigenous varieties. Although up to 48 different varieties have been identified in these vineyards, the "Alto" plot, as its name indicates, is located at the highest altitudes and is where the Jaen, Alvarelhão, Tinta Pinheira, Tinta Carvalha and Bastardo varieties predominate. However, other varieties such as Touriga Nacional, Português Azul and Negro Mouro are also found, although in smaller proportions.
The vinification of these grapes was carried out with the utmost respect for their nature. Spontaneous fermentation, carried out with indigenous yeasts, took place in stainless steel tanks. Afterwards, the wine was aged for 24 months in three 400-litre Carvalho barrels of 2nd and 3rd year. Finally, the wine was bottled directly by gravity, guaranteeing the purity and essence of the wine.
