Description
Sébastien Riffault Raudonas is a wine that breaks the rules of the classic Sancerre. Don't expect a light and fruity red wine. This is a different story. Here, every sip is a journey to the heart of the Loire, where Pinot Noir expresses itself with a rustic, pure and uncompromising character.
Sébastien Riffault 's winery is a small temple to natural winemaking. Located in Sancerre, it departs from the conventional canon and opts for a biodynamic approach without additives or artifice. Its vineyards, more than 40 years old, grow on clay and limestone soils, a perfect combo to give the grapes freshness and depth.
Winemaking
The winemaking of Sébastien Riffault Raudonas is also a statement of intent. First, the grapes are harvested by hand and some of them are allowed to develop botrytis (the fungus that in other wines such as Sauternes gives complexity and sweetness, but which here gives a unique texture). Then, fermentation starts with indigenous yeasts and a 10-day maceration with whole bunches of grapes. It then spends 24 months on fine lees in stainless steel and 12 months in used oak barrels, with no sulphites, no fining and no filtration. Pure expression of the land.
Taste
When you pour Sébastien Riffault Raudonas, the first thing that strikes you is its colour: garnet red, but with a certain cloudiness, a sign of its natural vinification. On the nose, it is a festival of aromas: ripe cherry, candied strawberry, old leather and a touch of spices such as cinnamon and cloves. A perfume that grabs you and invites you to discover more.
On the palate, the acidity is vibrant, with soft but present tannins. Sébastien Riffault Raudonas has that freshness that only wines from chalky soils can offer. Each sip is a combination of red fruit, earthy notes and a hint of smoke reminiscent of a fireplace lit on an autumn evening. Persistent, complex, unforgettable.
It is not a Pinot Noir for everyone. But if you like wines that tell a story, Sébastien Riffault Raudonas is a bottle you have to try at least once in your life.
