Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2018 Carrocel (Quinta da Pellada) is Castro's upper-level Touriga Nacional, the old clones from Talhão 5 in the Quinta da Pellada vineyard. It was aged for 28 months in third and fourth-use French oak and comes in at 13.4% alcohol. This will be released in October. The border looks a bit golden, but for the moment, Castro has stopped the Golden Carrocel.

Just gorgeous, this is the one that has the most finesse, the most flavor and the longest finish of the group in this report. Developing well, this is still very youthful and vibrant, even if the tannins are mostly ripe. This graceful and wonderfully elegant wine relies on understatement and freshness, but the more you drink it, the more you'll want. For one thing, it is just delicious, with blackberries, plums and occasional red fruits. This will age and develop. It is a polished wine. I'd like to see it demonstrate a bit of development, but it's worth leaning up on it today.

Features

Description

Quinta da Pellada Carrocel comes from a 45-year-old vineyard planted with an old, low-yielding clone. With a density of 5,000 vines per hectare, these vines are located at an altitude of 500 metres above sea level. The type of soil in which they grow is granitic with clay and sand. The grape variety used is Touriga Nacional.

Winemaking

Harvesting takes place at the end of September, when the grapes have successfully completed their optimum ripening cycle. The grapes are vinified respecting their nature in stainless steel tanks with a total maceration of up to 12 days. Malolactic fermentation and ageing takes place in 400 litre oak casks, 2nd and 3rd year of use, for 30 months.

Taste

Quinta da Pellada Carrocel surprises with its intensity and elegance. Its floral bouquet is complemented by a firm palate, backed by remarkable acidity and soft tannins. It is a very fresh wine, with a flavour that evokes pure fruit, offering a unique sensory experience.
