Description
From the very beginning, Petit Pittacum was born with the aim of showing the most honest expression of the AtlanticMencía. The winery is committed to small, almost secret plots of centenary vines that climb the coolest slopes of Bierzo, where the north and east orientation guarantees slow ripening and natural balance. It was in one of those uncertain years, when the team decided not to bring forward the harvest, that the wine took on its identity: a Mencía without make-up, where the freshness of the clay soil and the altitude define the most delicate and tense profile of the region. This decision marked a style: the search for precision, clean fruit, subtle structure and a direct reading of the landscape.
Winemaking
The grapes for Petit Pittacum are harvested by hand in small 12 kg crates. Cluster by cluster it is selected on the table, and after destemming without crushing, the must ferments for 15 days at 25 °C. Gentle punching down and pumping over are carried out to extract the essential, without overloading. There is no distracting barrel ageing: just steel, fruit and time. Petit Pittacum is bottled with minimal intervention, seeking to preserve that vibrant, young character, marked by the natural freshness of the Atlantic Mencía.
Taste
Petit Pittacum opens with lively notes of cherry and wild raspberry, accompanied by blackberry and a slight hint of wilted violets. The nose also reveals a mineral nuance, almost of wet stone and undergrowth. The palate is agile and precise: fine tannins, electric acidity, medium body. The red fruit remains juicy, but controlled, and there is a dry finish with a slight earthy, almost saline echo that lengthens the passage. It is a wine that speaks softly but clearly, perfect to accompany light stews, sautéed mushrooms, Galician-style octopus or poultry rice dishes. An Atlantic red in its purest and most refreshing version: direct, sincere and with a natural elegance that seduces effortlessly.
