Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

From the zone of Viana do Bolo with lots of granite rich in mica, the 2018 Peixes da Rocha was produced from the same two plots of old vines as before. This is always more backward, serious, closed and higher pitched than the Peixes da Estrada, and this is stonier and more austere. All the wines from 2018 show quite floral and delicate, and this is even more so, because I think that's the character of the vineyards used for this cuvée. There's a lot of light here, nuanced and complex, light to medium-bodied, subtle. There is great finesse here. The fragile balance might fool you, because the wine has a lot of energy and should develop nicely in bottle. 1,300 bottles were filled in May 2020.

Features

Description

Sometimes a wine transports you. Not just to a vineyard, but to a history, to a land that speaks through every sip. Peixes da Rocha is one of those wines. Born in the most remote corners of Galicia, between the small villages of Punxeiro and Santa Mariña de Froxais, this wine is the living testimony of an extreme landscape, where viticulture defies logic.
Made by the visionaries Jesús Olivares and Curro Bareño, this red wine comes from a mosaic of indigenous grape varieties: Mencía, Mouratón, Grao Negro, Garnacha Tintorera, Bastardo and an unexpected nod to white grapes such as Godello, Doña Blanca and Palomino. The vines, up to 80 years old, cling to poor soils of granite, mica and quartzite, on terraces that seem sculpted by time. They are there, at an altitude of 850 metres, defying the cold and the harshness of the Atlantic climate with their indomitable character.

Elaboration

Peixes da Rocha is not a recipe wine. It is made with absolute respect for the fruit and the place it comes from. Fermentation takes place spontaneously, with whole bunches of grapes and indigenous yeasts. There is no rush: maceration is prolonged for two months, allowing the tannins to integrate naturally. The wine then rests in neutral 500-litre French oak barrels for 12 months, without unnecessary manipulation. No filtering. No corrections. Just the wine as it is.
