Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2019 Late Bottled Vintage Port is unfiltered and closed with a cork, the serious style of this category, from a very good year in the style of 2005 or 2015 that can age for decades. It has 100 grams of sugar and is velvety and really a mini Vintage Port, aged for a bit longer in cask (but short for the category) and bottled in its fourth year. It's still tannic and a bit closed, with the tannin is cushioning the sweetness. It could be drunk now but should be a lot more complex with time in bottle. It has balance with a big structure, able to age for a long time. 2019 was a very complete year for Port. They produced 100,000 bottles of this. It was bottled in 2023

Description
Niepoort Late Bottled Vintage (LBV) comes from a specific year and represents a renowned winemaking tradition. It is aged for 4-6 years in old oak barrels, as opposed to the Vintage wine, which is aged for 2-3 years. This particularity allows it to occupy an intermediate space between Ruby and Vintage wines. While a Ruby Port should be consumed when it is young, an excellent Vintage Port may require 15 to 20 years to show its full splendour. This need led to the idea, in the 1960s, of ageing the wine for 4 to 6 years in large barrels before bottling. The result is a wine in the style of a Vintage Port, with deep colour and fruit concentration, but with a more mature character due to its prolonged ageing in wood.
Winemaking
The red grape varieties used in its production include Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinto Cão, Tinta Francisca, Tinta Amarela, Sousão, Tinta Roriz, among others. These grapes come from vineyards with an average age ranging from 60 to over 100 years old, located in the regions of Vale do Pinhão and Ferrão.
The grapes were trodden in "lagares" and then aged in large oak barrels in the cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia. The wine was bottled unfiltered after only 4 years to preserve its freshness and fruitiness.
Taste
Niepoort LBV stands out for its bright ruby red appearance and a very expressive aroma of mint, sweet violets, together with some firm green notes, characteristic of a mature Vintage. On the palate, mint and spice can be appreciated with excellent length. It is a wonderful example of a mature unfiltered LBV with a classic bottle-aged character. It is also the perfect accompaniment to chocolate desserts, especially those with bitter chocolate, or a peppery steak.
