Description
The Matassa winery was founded in 2001 by the South African Tom Lubbe, and is located in the Roussillon region, in the south of France.
This winery works with a wide variety of native grapes such as Grenache, Carignan and Monastrell. Its lands are located 450 metres above sea level, with an annual yield of 3,500 kg per hectare per year.
Undoubtedly, the Domaine Matassa winery is unique, as they harvest the fruit by hand, work only with their own yeasts and opt for 100% natural cultivation, respecting the environment where the ageing process takes place.

Winemaking
This wine is a natural red wine made from the Cariñena grape and a smaller percentage of Cariñena gris and Cariñena Blanca. It is made by hand harvesting the grapes, which means that the fruit arrives intact at the winery. The juice is fermented and undergoes a short maceration, which lasts between 4 to 8 days.
Fermentation is done with indigenous yeasts and after fermentation the wine is left to rest for further ageing, which can last between 16 and 20 months in 500-litre barrels. It is then bottled without filtering or fining.
Taste
Matassa Rouge is an intense and very structured natural wine. It has a red colour with brick-red rim where the flavours of spices, red fruits and grapes predominate. It has a smoky flavour.
It ischaracterised by its low acidity and its aroma is reminiscent of different spices and the character of the Carignan grape and red fruits.
