Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2023 Sufreiral comes from a centenary plot in the village of Toral de los Vados on the other, southwest-facing side of Pico Ferreira, one of the few plots on limestone-based soils in Bierzo. It fermented in 1,000-liter vats, as he has different small plots that are vinified separately, with some 35% full clusters and indigenous yeasts (like all his wines). It matured in 600-liter oak barrels and a 1,200-liter oak vat for 12 months. It's very complete, floral and nuanced, elegant and fine-boned, with a different texture, chalky, given the limestone soils. The wine has 13.07% alcohol, a pH of 3.69 and 5.11 grams of acidity. 1,940 bottles were filled in January 2025.

Features

Description

The red wine Sufreiral is produced at the César Marquez winery, which is known for its elegant wines that faithfully reflect the terroir. This wine has notes of red fruits and is perfect to accompany game meats.
Although he has not yet had a long career, César Márquez is positioning himself as one of the best winemakers in El Bierzo, due to the success of his wines, and this may be due in large part to the fact that his main advisor is his uncle, the renowned winemaker Raúl Pérez.

Winemaking

César Márquez Sufreiral is made with Mencía, Garnacha and Tntorera grapes from a centenary vineyard located in the Sufreiral area, from which the wine takes its name, whose soils are limestone and are located at an altitude of more than 600 metres above sea level,
The grapes are harvested by hand, then the whole bunches are gently trodden with the feet to control the extraction, and then fermented with indigenous yeasts and a part with stems. Maceration lasts 35 days and ageing lasts one year in French oak barrels.

Taste

This red wine is round and fresh. On the other hand, the César Márquez Sufreiral wine has a fruity aroma with herbaceous, spicy and mineral notes. It is a complex and elegant wine, with good acidity and silky tannins and a long finish.

A surprising wine

Be sure to enjoy this incredible wine that will surprise you as soon as you try it. The César Márquez Sufreiral wine goes very well with poultry, game, veal and pasta.
The best thing about this wine is that it has been elaborated with traditional methods that help it to preserve a good structure and to better express the terroir.
