Description
Aalto wine, a creation of Mariano García Fernández, founder of Aalto Bodegas y Viñedos in 1999, is an emblem of modernity and excellence in Ribera del Duero. This wine, made mainly with the Tempranillo variety, comes from vineyards ranging in age from 15 to 80 years old, spread over nine villages in Ribera del Duero. The diversity of soils, which include limestone clay, iron clay, sand, sandstone, glacial rock, silt and alluvial, brings a unique complexity to the wine.
Winemaking
Aalto' s winemaking is characterised by completely manual work in the vineyard, with a focus on maintaining low yields. Harvesting is done by hand and the grapes are transported in small boxes to the winery, where they are carefully selected and destemmed before fermentation. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel, cement or oak vats, by parcels, ensuring a gentle extraction of fruit without harsh or bitter tannins. The wine is then transferred by gravity to French (85%) and American (15%) oak barrels, where it ages for 18 months. In recent vintages, Mariano has reduced both the amount of new oak used and the barrel ageing time, seeking to bring more freshness and purity to the wine.
Taste
Aalto Ribera del Duero is a wine of great volume, reflecting Mariano's ability to capture both the power and elegance of Tempranillo, a variety that tends towards rusticity in the warm climate of this region. The wine is distinguished by its structure and power, combined with exceptional fruit purity. These characteristics have made it a benchmark for the modern style of Ribera del Duero, receiving high scores from renowned critics such as James Suckling and Wine Advocate.
