Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The single-vineyard Cinsault 2021 Monk comes from a rented vineyard in Guarilihue-Tiajacura on silt and iron soils and was named after jazz musician Thelonius Monk, who Pedro Parra describes as 'complex and innovative.' It fermented with 100% full clusters and matured in and oak vat for 11 months. The wine comes from red, tight soils, with lots of iron and small particles of quartz. It always has a deeper voice, and it's subtle and keeping the style of the Imaginador, quite Comando G (Las Umbrías, mentioned Parra), fine-boned with grainy tannins and good grip. It's floral and elegant, with some ethereal fragility. 1,712 bottles were filled in February 2022

Features

Description

Pedro Parra Monk wine is a unique expression that pays homage to some of the greatest jazz musicians in history. In particular, this wine is named after the iconic jazz musician Thelonius Monk, reflecting his direct, strong and complex character in every sip. Pedro Parra y Familia's line of wines seeks to capture the essence and passion of jazz, and Monk is a clear demonstration of this commitment.

Winemaking

This single vineyard Cinsault comes from soils rich in silt, sand and red granite. Fermentation is carried out with indigenous yeasts with 30% whole clusters. It is aged in 1,500 litre oak vats for just under a year before bottling.

Taste

Pedro Parra Monk is characterised by a wine of great texture and depth. It has notes of iron, fresh blood, smoke and roots, all against a background of crisp red fruit. On the palate, it stands out for its greater texture and depth, with a longer finish. It is a wine that, like the music of Thelonius Monk, is direct, strong and complex, showing itself in all its splendour.
