Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2021 Opus One is a blend of 93% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, with the remaining 1% made up of Malbec and Merlot. Svelte and silky in feel, it boasts sedate, controlled aromas of cherries, cedar and sandalwood. It's medium- to full-bodied, restrained and poised, its softly dusty finish speaking to carefully managed extraction in a vintage concentrated by drought.

Features

Description

Opus One is a red wine born from the collaboration between Baron Philippe de Rothschild, legendary owner of Château Mouton Rothschild, and renowned Napa Valley winemaker Robert Mondavi. This alliance sought to combine the great winemaking traditions and innovations of both families. With a singular goal: to create an exceptional wine in the heart of the Napa Valley. More than just a wine, Opus One was born of a passion. Dedicated to uncompromising quality, Opus One's unique purpose is to express this vision and passionate spirit for generations to come.

Winemaking

Harvesting began in mid-September and lasted four weeks. As for its ageing, this wine has spent 19 months in new French oak barrels, which gives it an unparalleled complexity and structure. The varieties that make up this wine, we find a predominance of Cabernet Sauvignon with 78%, followed by Merlot with 8%, Petit Verdot with 6%, Cabernet Franc with 6% and Malbec with 2%. This combination of grapes gives Opus One its distinctive character and its aromatic and gustatory richness.

Taste

Opus One is characterised by intense aromas of black plum, blueberry, blackcurrant and dried rose petals, accentuated by mineral nuances. Its creamy, satiny texture is framed by fine-grained tannins. The freshness and soft glow of acidity create a subtle tension with flavours of dark fruits, aromatic herbs, espresso and cocoa. A delicate dark chocolate bitterness lingers on the finish.
