Niepoort Charme 2023

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The extremely young and elegant 2023 Charme is the most elegant red in their Douro profile. It's a groundbreaking wine produced in Vale Mendiz and Quinta de Napoles to increase the quantity (and quality) following the same logic—a short maceration of the full clusters in lagar, pressed to barrels where it finished fermenting and aged nine months. They use high-altitude vineyards with a mixture of grapes, including whites. It's floral and herbal, perfumed, elegant, fine-boned and balanced, with an elegant profile. It has terrific balance and should age gracefully. This follows the path of 2019 and 2021. 14,000 bottled produced.

Description
Niepoort Charme is a Douro appellation red wine distinguished by its elegance and complexity. After an experimental release in 2000, the Charme 2002 was launched on the market. This wine comes from old vineyards located in Vale de Mendiz, in the Pinhão Valley. These small, protected vineyards, with low production, are ideal for producing elegant wines with ripe tannins. Early harvesting is essential for Charme, as it is a challenge to obtain production from these precious and rare vines and, at the same time, to ensure that the harvest takes place at the optimum point of ripeness.
Winemaking
After manual harvesting and a rigorous selection of Tinta Roriz and Touriga Franca grapes from vineyards averaging between 70 and more than 100 years old, Charme ferments in a traditional stone lagar with all whole clusters. After a short maceration (similar to Port wine), vinification is completed in new French oak barrels. The wine remains in the same barrels for 15 months, where malolactic fermentation also takes place.
Taste
Charme has an impressive and generous bouquet, with balanced concentrated fruit and elegant notes of tea and tobacco. The palate is velvety, with ripe tannins and soft red fruits. It is a structured and complete wine, with great freshness.
