Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

I was eager to taste the 2021 Aro, a wine produced only in special years when the Graciano ripens thoroughly, as it represents a significant percentage of the blend here; the other grape used is Tempranillo. The grapes fermented in small oak vats with indigenous yeasts, and the wine matured in new French oak barrels for 18 months. This is their most exclusive wine; only 6,194 bottles were produced in 2021. It was bottled in October 2023. The next vintage will be 2022, but it was not made in 2023 or 2024.

Features

Description

There are wines that simply tell a story from the first sip, and Muga Aro by Bodegas Muga is one of them. Born in the heart of La Rioja, this wine is the result of a family winery that has been perfecting the art of winemaking since 1932.
Its composition is a powerful and elegant combination of Tempranillo and Graciano, a pair that works perfectly: the Tempranillo adds structure and depth, while the Graciano gives it that touch of freshness and acidity that makes every sip feel vibrant. These grapes come from vineyards located in clay-limestone and alluvial soils, which gives them a subtle but present minerality.

Winemaking

Made with absolute respect for tradition, Muga Aro ferments spontaneously in small wooden vats with indigenous yeasts, without forcing the temperature or rushing the process. It then spends 18 months in new French oak barrels, where time and wood work their magic, refining the wine without stealing the limelight from the fruit. To close the cycle, it is clarified with fresh egg whites, a handcrafted detail that speaks of the care with which each bottle is made.

Taste

From the moment you pour it into the glass, Muga Aro makes its presence felt. Its colour is a deep red with purplish glints, like a sunset that refuses to say goodbye. On the nose, it bursts into a symphony of forest fruits, with notes of blackberries, ripe plums and a delicate touch of violets.
On the palate, it is pure harmony. The acidity of the Graciano gives it a vibrant pulse, while the Tempranillo displays its elegance with fine, silky tannins. There are glints of vanilla, a subtle spicy touch and perfectly integrated oak that rounds the whole without overshadowing the fruit. The finish is long, lingering, with that sensation of wanting another sip, only to revisit its complexity once again.
Muga Aro is not just a wine, it is an experience. One of those that invite you to stop, to savour calmly and to enjoy every moment. If you are looking for a Rioja with character, depth and a touch of soul, this is the wine for you.
