Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Based on 75% Pinot Meunier, 15% Chardonnay and 5% Pinot Noir (30- to 60-year-old vines, mainly picked in 2011), the NV Origin'elle Extra-Brut is a pretty good representative of both the plantings on the biodynamically farmed 8.4 hectares; these vineyards are located in the most western part of the Marne valley. The wine is made in the special style of Françoise Bedel and her son Vincent, whose wines are kept on the lees for almost one year (in this case in enameled tanks). Straw-golden in color and clear and aromatic on the intense and pretty rich nose, this is a full and round, yet delicate and silky textured fizz. It has a long and aromatic finish. Although the wine seems to be rich and fat at first, it is in fact full-flavored but pure and finesse-full. The finish is clear and fresh, and reveals a nice mineral grip. This is an excellent Champagne as an aperitif, but also with food. My sample has the Lot number OX110415 and was disgorged in April 2015.

Features

Description

Françoise Bedel Origin'elle Extra Brut is the flagship wine of the winery and represents the pure expression of Pinot Meunier, bringing roundness and freshness. This Champagne is characterised by its origin from the Vallée de la Marne and is a true example of the tradition and expertise of the Françoise Bedel house.

Winemaking

Françoise Bedel Origin'elle Extra Brut is made from grapes from vineyards ranging in age from 30 to 60 years old. These vineyards are located in terroirs composed of clay, silt and marl on a limestone base.
The composition of the wine is a blend in which Pinot Meunier predominates with 85%, followed by 10% Pinot Noir and 5% Chardonnay.
The must ferments with indigenous yeasts in enamelled tanks (95%) and in oak barrels (5%) and then partially undergoes malolactic fermentation. Finally, the wine rests with its lees in the bottle for 3 years, where the second fermentation takes place (mousse formation). The final dosage of less than 2.45 g/l, which classifies it as an Extra Brut, is a blend in which Pinot Meunier predominates with 85%, followed by other varieties that make up the remaining 15%.

Taste

Françoise Bedel Origin'elle Extra Brut has an intensely yeasty nose with notes of ripe apple, oxidised citrus, chalk, minerals and subtle hints of nuts. On the palate, it is medium to light-bodied, with a fresh and precise acidity.
