Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The inaugural release of the golden colored Clandestin NV Brut Nature Les Semblables is 100% Pinot Noir from the 2015 harvest. Cultivated on cooler, west-facing, organically farmed slopes located on Kimmeridgian limestone soils in the Aube, it fermented in French oak and was kept sur lie for at least 15 months. This is a clear, coolish and fresh yet aromatic Pinot Noir with intense yet fine fruit and almost steely iodine flavors in the background. Medium-bodied yet firm and focused on the palate, this is a steely, superbly vinous, very elegant, mineral and pretty 'Burgundian' Champagne whose bubbles are so fine that you almost don't feel them after a while in the glass. The wine has a delicately creamy/chalky texture and nice, vinous grip but remains pure, very fine and elegant from the beginning to the finish. The iodine taste makes this not just an excellent aperitif but also a lovely Champagne to pair with fish, seafood and white meat. My sample was disgorged in September 2017 (R15). Tasted May 2018.

Features

Description

Champagne Clandestin Les Semblables Boréal Brut Nature is a jewel emerging from the Champagne region of southern France, specifically from the Aube region, Côte des Bar. Unlike the big Champagne houses that dominate the scene in Reims and Epernay, the Aube offers a more modest and authentic perspective on the world of Champagne. Here, in the village of Buxieres sur Arce, we find Benoit Doussot, who leads the exciting Clandestin project.

Winemaking

Benoit Doussot has dedicated his passion and effort to select the best vines and soils for Clandestin Boréal Champagne. These vines, with an average age of 20 years, are testament to the dedication and high quality standards that Benoit has set. The meticulous selection of some of the best organic plots in the Aube, combined with careful winemaking and minimal intervention, results in a truly extraordinary champagne. A biodynamic champagne that is composed entirely of Pinot Noir from the blending of several plots with chalky soils. This creation is the first fruit of this fascinating new project that promises immense potential.

Taste

The palate reveals a clean, bright champagne with aromas of red fruits and mineral notes. On the palate, it is vinous and fresh, with a clear acidity. It is a complex and elegant champagne, culminating in a very pleasant finish.
