Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The red 2019 Candea Tinto is an easy-drinking, unoaked and fruit-driven blend of Mencía, Arauxa (Tempranillo), Garnacha Tintorera and Mouratón from 20-year-old vines in the village of Tamagos at 370 meters in altitude, plus some Alicante Bouschet and Mouratón from 70-year-old vines. It fermented with one-third full clusters and indigenous yeasts and was kept in stainless steel for over one year before it was bottled. It has only 12% alcohol and a pH of 3.69. It's serious—it has complexity and lightness, with very fine, chalky tannins. Delicious and way beyond what the price point suggests. 14,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in September 2021. There is no 2017 or 2018 of this wine. This is the following wine to the already impressive 2016.

Features

Description

There are wines that take you straight to their land with the first sip, and Candea Tinto is one of them. It is like opening a window to Monterrei, that small and charming region of Galicia where the vines grow under the Atlantic breeze and the warm sun. José Luis Mateo, heart and soul of Quinta da Muradella, makes this wine with a clear philosophy: to respect the authenticity of the terroir and let nature work its magic.
Candea Tinto is a vibrant blend of Mencía, Bastardo, Garnacha Tintorera, Gran Negro, Mouratón and Arauxa (the local name for Tempranillo). Each grape contributes its character, weaving an aromatic profile where red fruits intertwine with delicate floral and herbal notes. The vines, planted at around 400-450 metres above sea level, sink their roots into poor soils, forcing them to strive for every drop of flavour.

Winemaking

The vinification of Candea Tinto is as natural as possible. Fermentation occurs spontaneously, without commercial yeasts, and about a third of the bunches are left whole to provide structure and freshness. The wine then rests in stainless steel and cement tanks, without going through wooden barrels. This keeps it pure, straightforward and without any make-up. It is bottled a year after the harvest, allowing time to play its part.

Taste

The first thing you taste when you taste Candea Tinto is an explosion of crunchy red fruits, as if you were biting into a cherry at just the right point of ripeness. Then come those floral notes and a subtle hint of wild herbs, as if you were strolling through the bush after a light rain. The palate is juicy, with well-balanced acidity and a fresh finish that invites another sip. Its alcohol is perfectly integrated, making it tremendously drinkable.
It is the kind of wine that you can open on any Tuesday and enjoy without complications, but also the kind of wine that surprises friends when you take it to a dinner party. Authentic, honest and with that Galician charm that never disappoints.
