Description

Alto Moncayo is a premium red wine made from 100% Grenache in the Campo de Borja DO, a region noted for the quality of its mountain vineyards. The vines, which are between 40 and 70 years old, are bush-trained in the foothills of the Moncayo, an area located at altitudes of between 500 and 750 metres above sea level. The soils in this region have a unique composition, with a mixture of red clay and slate, and are very poor in organic matter, which forces the roots to dig deep in search of nutrients, bringing complexity to the wine.
The Alto Moncayo winery, founded in 2002 by Spanish importer Jorge Ordóñez and other partners, has gained international renown for its focus on Garnacha. With a total area of 62 hectares of vineyards, the winery produces around 80,000 bottles a year, underlining its boutique approach. The vines benefit from a continental climate of cold, dry winters with an Atlantic influence, and warm summers with a Mediterranean influence, creating an optimal environment for grape ripening.

Winemaking

The grapes are harvested by hand and transported in small baskets to ensure the integrity of the grapes. Malolactic fermentation is carried out in new American and French oak barrels, and the ageing process lasts 18 to 20 monthsin these barrels. This technique, together with careful control of the process, contributes to the complexity and structure of the wine.

Taste

Alto Moncayo has a rich and complex nose, with notes of black fruits such as blackberries and plums, accompanied by balsamic touches and toasted aromas from its oak ageing. On the palate, it is a wine that stands out for its robust and well-balanced structure, with a silky texture and a long, enveloping finish. The perfectly integrated tannins provide a pleasant velvety sensation, while its powerful body is balanced by the freshness provided by the altitude of the vineyards.
This wine is ideal to accompany hearty dishes such as roasted red meats, game stews and cured cheeses, offering a complex and memorable oenological experience.
