Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2021 Morstein Riesling GG offers a deep and intense yet pure, nuanced, fresh and highly complex bouquet of crushed limestone, even chalk intertwined with bright, lemon fruit aromas. This bouquet is nothing less than spectacular in all its purity, subtle intensity and depth. The palate is silky, pure and saline, beautifully fine and fresh, very elegant and long yet still discreet and reduced in its expression. However, this is a chalky and lemony Mortsein from a cool year that will gain texture and complexity with bottle age. This will turn out to be a classic, and I can only recommend to buy more than you might think to buy based on the conservative score. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in August 2022.

Features

Description

Wittmann Morstein Riesling Trocken belongs to the GROSSES GEWÄCHS category, a designation that marks the highest quality vineyards in Rheinhessen, each precisely demarcated by plot. The wines grown on these sites are distinguished by their extraordinary sense of origin and their ability to age.

Winemaking

The purely south-facing location stretches along a high plateau, 280 metres above sea level, and is the oldest vineyard in Westhofen, first mentioned in 1282. The GROSSE LAGE MORSTEIN is located in the heart of the hillside, between 180 and 240 metres above sea level, with slopes of up to 20%. The soils are mainly heavy clay loam, with limestone deposits in the upper layers. The substrate is dominated by porous layers of limestone rock, ensuring an optimal supply of nutrients and minerals.

Taste

Morstein Riesling Trocken shows herbal notes of amber and gallium with ripe, juicy fruits such as lime, apricot and peach. The nose and front palate evoke a tight rosebud, but then the wine expands in an almost supernatural way as it flows over the palate, culminating in a totally focused finish with stunning minerality.
