Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2021 Mille Lieux is an assemblage of 13 organic and even biodynamically farmed grape varieties cultivated on granite, clay, sandstone and limestone marl soils in the villages of Kaysersberg, Ammerschwihr, Zellenberg, Rodern and Ribeauvillé. Bottled after one year of lees' contact in used barrels without filtration or added sulfites, the slightly cloudy, dark white-golden blend offers a pure, delicately fruity and yeasty, lovely natural bouquet with elegant notes of lemon juice, confit de citron and baby pineapples intermingled with some herbal/vegetal notes as well as hints of nougat and mocha. This pure, subtle and mineral nose is stable and develops very well in the air so that, after a week from the opened bottle, perfectly ripe apricot aromas emerge and intertwine with earthy and flint stone notes. On the palate, the Mille Lieux is rather light to medium-bodied, bone dry yet juicy or textured and finessed with vivacious but refined acidity and lemon freshness and lime/orange zests on the finely grippy and persistently saline finish. This white should be excellent with starters, fish and veggies but also pasta and risotto. It is not the most complex wine of the series, but after a week, it's still a fabulous and highly enjoyable cuvée of 'a thousand and one places.' 13.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted from lot ALS21 in February 2023.

Features

Description

La Grange de l'Oncle Charles Mille Lieux is a unique expression of viticulture and oenology. Produced in Ostheim, a small village in the Alsace region, this orange wine encapsulates the essence of an exceptional terroir. What sets it apart is its composition of 14 grape varieties, a blend that reflects the purity of the terroir. This wine is a testament to dedication and respect for nature, as it is made according to biodynamic practices.

Winemaking

The winemaking of La Grange de l'Oncle Charles Mille Lieux is a carefully orchestrated process that begins in the vineyard. Work in the vineyards is carried out with draught horses, avoiding soil compaction and preserving its biological and microbiological vitality. In addition, sheep grazing in the vineyards not only helps to keep the grass short, but also enriches the soil with organic fertilisers. These sustainable agricultural practices are fundamental to the quality of the wine.
In the winery, the wine is produced unfiltered and without the addition of sulphites, which requires special care in handling. Natural vinification and the absence of chemical intruders ensure that the wine faithfully expresses the character of its origin.

Taste

La Grange de l'Oncle Charles Mille Lieux is a wine that defies expectations. Although it is an Alsatian white blend, it has a slightly oxidative character and a slightly vinegary touch. This unique flavour profile is balanced by clean, pale fruit, including notes of apple, pear and peach, complemented by hints of camomile and lemon citrus. The highlight is its electric acidity, which brings a surprising liveliness to the palate. This wine is a sensory experience that combines traditional flavours with a bold, modern twist, reflecting the philosophy and skill of its creator, Jérôme François.
