Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

There is very high ripeness and some heady aromas in the 2017 Pizarra along with abundant dusty tannins that remind me of the profile of the wines from the turn of the century, with more extraction and tannins. 6,500 bottles produced. It was bottled in August 2019.

Features

Description

Algueira Pizarra is a red wine that represents the essence of the Ribeira Sacra, a renowned wine region in Spain. This wine is a single varietal, made exclusively from 100% Mencía grapes, which gives it a unique and distinctive identity. The Mencía grape, known for its adaptability to slate soils, is the protagonist of this wine, providing unique characteristics that are reflected in its flavour and aroma.

Winemaking

The production of Algueira Pizarra is a carefully orchestrated process. The grapes come from the Carballocobo estate, guaranteeing a constant, quality production. In the vinification process, a traditional method is used where the grapes are trodden by foot in large capacity French oak vats (2,000 and 5,000 litres). This process includes a cold pre-fermentation maceration, followed by a long post-fermentation maceration of more than 30 days, which contributes to the wine's intensity and complexity. Ageing takes place alternately in French oak barrels and foudres for 12 to 18 months, adding layers of complexity and softening the tannins.

Taste

Algueira Pizarra presents itself in the glass with an intense cherry red colour and a medium-high robe. Its aroma is very intense, highlighting the red fruit, balsamic notes of the terroir, such as green coffee and chocolate, and a marked minerality that gives it its name. On the palate, the attack is fresh, with an intense and structured passage. The tannins are crisp, complex and warm, contributing to a rich and deep taste experience. The wine has a long aftertaste and an aftertaste that evokes the mineral character of the vineyard and its raspón production.
