Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2018 Pago la Garduña, which has different clones of Syrah in it, shows more delicate in cooler years like this 2018, and the wine has more elegance, complexity and freshness. It's still powerful and ripe at 14.5% alcohol and has a varietal profile, with a reductive personality, notes of olives, violets and other flowers, licorice and white pepper and a mineral twist; in a word, complex. It's very intense and structured, but with silky tannins. It matured for 18 months in French barriques, 50% of them new. To me, this is one of the finest vintages of this wine. 4,708 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2020.

Description
Abadía Retuerta Pago Garduña, an oenological jewel of the Abadía Retuerta winery, is an exceptional single varietal wine made entirely from Syrah grapes. This wine, originally from Sardón de Duero in Valladolid, Spain, is the result of a careful selection of grapes grown in vineyards located at an altitude of up to 850 metres above sea level, in limestone soils and under a continental climate.
Winemaking
The winemaking of Abadía Retuerta Pago Garduña involves meticulous attention to detail. After harvesting, the grapes are sorted on a sorting table and then destemmed. Maceration is extended for 25 days, followed by fermentation at 28°C. Malolactic fermentation and ageing for 16 months in new French Allier oak barrels adds complexity and elegance to the wine.
Taste
Abadía Retuerta Pago Garduña is distinguished by its velvety and enveloping profile, with soft and ripe tannins that delight the palate. On the nose, this wine reveals an aromatic complexity dominated by ripe cherries and ripe plums, complemented by floral notes of hibiscus, spices, toast and cocoa. On the palate, it is opulent and suggestive, with remarkable length and breadth. This red wine is an example of balance and smoothness, with a gentle acidity and seductive maturity. Its dark cherry colour with violet reflections and its high robe reflect its intensity and depth.
