Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2022 Uhlen Laubach GG opens with a clear, deep, slate-spicy nose of iodine and ripe, intense and concentrated fruit. In the mouth, it is balanced, elegant, soft and lush, with fine, salty and spicy acidity. It has a slate-spicy finish with good intensity and length. Tasted as a sample at the Vorpremiere VDP.Grosses Gewächs in Wiesbaden in August 2023.

Features

Description

Heymann-Löwenstein Uhlen L Laubach wine intertwines its history with the geology and winemaking tradition of the area. The name "Laubach" comes from a stream ('Bach') where a mill, the Lohmühle, was once located. Although not directly related to Uhlen wine, it is relevant to mention that near Koblenz, a geologist discovered a variant of extremely calcareous slate, unexpected for that locality. This slate was named after the town of its discovery, and in time, its presence in Uhlen led to the wine world.

Winemaking

As for its production, this wine is characterised by being vinified exclusively with indigenous yeasts in wooden barrels. No enzymes or fining agents are added. It matures at least until the summer of the year following the harvest on its lees. Uhlen Laubach wine is made technically dry and bears the designation VDP.GROSSES GEWÄCHS. In exceptional years, sweet versions Auslese, Beerenauslese and Trockenbeerenauslese are also produced .

Flavour

Heymann-Löwenstein Uhlen L Laubach is a dry Riesling from Mosel that stands out for its unique personality, similar to the wines of Burgundy. It has an impressive textural complexity and a waxy quality on the nose that sets it apart from other wines from the region. Its flavour is powerful and deep, but at the same time, it remains restrained until its imposing finish. The aromatic notes are reminiscent of peach, citrus fruits and herbs, accompanied by intense minerality. The palate is concentrated, powerful and juicy, with elegant acidity, playful herbal aromas and a solid mineral structure. Its depth, perfect balance and exceptionally long finish make it an unforgettable palate experience.
